Paparazzi
Thomas puts his arm around my shoulders as we walk to the car. âCan we finish this conversation in the car?â he asks as the paparazzi casually follow behind us.
How are all these so-called paparazzi here? They're like ants. You never see ants, then you leave a crumb out and all of a sudden out of nowhere there are hundreds. Where did they come from? How did they know food was there? How long did they have to travel?
Will slides into the driverâs seat not giving Joan the option to drive. Which I think is a marvelous idea. I throw my jacket at Joan, preparing her. She shoots me a mean look and sticks out her tongue.
âOkay, if we are going to stay out, we need to stop at a store. Weâre girls. We need things,â I say, matter of fact. âRight Joan?â
Thomas raises his eyebrows and bites his bottom lip, âWhat sort of things?â
Joan shoots back dryly, âA toothbrush and toothpaste for one, and panties.â
Thomas leans over to me and whispers, âYou donât need panties.â
âHow far are we from the house?â I ask, tapping Will on the shoulder.
âAbout two hours. Itâs deep in the mountains. The distance isnât far, but we probably should drive slowly. We could stop at the store here. Itâs remote,â he replies, thumbing through his phone.
âI found a few stores about six-miles from here. Letâs head there, if thatâs good with you,â Will says, putting in the address. Will cranks the engine as Joan wraps the jacket around her head. At least she knows her limits.
I giggle as we slowly make our way down the road. Luckily, the road to the store is completely flat and not on the side of a mountain at all. Not even remotely close to what we drove in on. We must be in the town part. I give out a little yelp anyways; just to freak Joan out.
âJeez, thatâs a long way down!â I say with extra urgency in my voice. Thomas squeezes my knee as Joan holds the jacket tighter around her head. For added pleasure I add, âI canât believe theyâd make a road up here, especially without guardrails!â
Joan starts to nervously tap her foot on the floorboard. âShut up, Stupid! I donât need the play by play!â
Will ruins the fun. He reaches over and lightly touches Joanâs hand, âWe arenât on the side of a cliff. Joan, look. I promise!â
Joan slowly unwraps the jacket from her head. She immediately throws her head back and laughs. âHave we been on this road the whole time?â
I slug Will on the arm. Even though Iâm playing like Iâm upset, I know where his intentions lie. He has been protective of Joan since day one. I love that about him. Heâs almost the exact opposite of Frank. Frank was nice but there was never any meat to him. With Will you can tell that he has so many layers to him. Frank was pretty one-dimensional, always keeping things on the surface.
